Everything texlode does.
The full tour: how the real-time engine works, what you can import, what you can export, and how the project is run. Back to the overview.
Accessibility built in, not bolted on
A 2024 study found that 75% of scholarly PDFs fail every accessibility criterion. The EU Accessibility Act (effective June 2025) makes inaccessible digital publications a legal liability in EU markets. texlode generates tagged PDF/UA-2 output with proper document structure, MathML for equations, and a built-in accessibility preflight that catches missing alt text, skipped heading levels, and undeclared document language before you publish, with AI-assisted alt-text generation to help close the gaps. And every export is automatically checked with veraPDF, the industry-standard PDF/UA validator. You see the compliance verdict right in the editor, for every book, every time. Ebooks are covered, too: EPUB exports carry every equation as accessible MathML that screen readers can speak, validated with EPUBCheck on every export and developed against Ace by DAISY, the EPUB accessibility checker; a 10,000-equation mathematics monograph audits clean. Accessible by default, without expensive remediation.

Your book, typeset by the best typesetting engine in the world
texlode is powered by the same typesetting engine that has been producing the world's most beautiful books, journals, and textbooks for over 40 years. The difference is visible on every page.
Optimal line breaking
The Knuth-Plass algorithm considers every possible way to break a paragraph into lines and chooses the best one. Word processors break line by line. LaTeX optimizes the whole paragraph at once.
Microtypography
Character protrusion, font expansion, and subtle tracking adjustments give text blocks an even, balanced appearance. Readers notice the result even when they cannot name the cause.
Beautiful math
Equations, matrices, integrals, and proofs, typeset with the same precision that scientific publishers have relied on for decades. No other system matches LaTeX's mathematical typography.
Print-ready output
Trim marks, bleed, correct margins, proper hyphenation in 50+ languages. The PDF is ready for print-on-demand or offset printing without post-processing.
Also included, because it is LaTeX
texlode inherits 40+ years of typography research from the TeX ecosystem. A partial list of what ships automatically:
Typography
- Widow and orphan control
- OpenType ligatures, small caps, old-style figures
- Kerning from font metrics
- Smart punctuation: en/em dashes, curly quotes, thin spaces
Long-book automation
- Auto-numbered figures, tables, equations, chapters
- Auto-generated Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables
- Index with page ranges and sub-entries
- Bibliography and citations: BibLaTeX, Zotero, any style
- Running headers with live chapter names
- Multi-page footnotes and per-chapter endnotes
Math and technical
- Math typesetting: the scientific publishing standard

Print your book and ebook from a single source
Write once. texlode produces both a print-ready PDF and a reflowable EPUB from the same manuscript, with no duplicate files to keep in sync and no conversion tools.
Print PDF
Fixed-layout PDF with trim, bleed, and margins matching your printer's specifications. PDF meets Lulu and IngramSpark print specifications.
EPUB
Reflowable ebook that works on Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and any e-reader. Equations export as true MathML rather than pictures of math, so they reflow, scale with the reader's font size, and can be read aloud by screen readers. For Kindle publishing, LODE Publishing offers a professional service with device-calibrated math baselines and accessibility certification. Chapter structure, images, and metadata carry over automatically. How to export an e-book
Write with your team
Invite your co-authors and editors to work on your book in real time. Everyone edits the same file and sees the same preview.
Real-time co-editing
Multiple people editing the same document simultaneously, with colored cursors showing who is working where.
Inline comments
Comments are embedded in the document source. Tied to the surrounding text, they carry over with copy-paste, persist through version control, and can appear in the PDF when you want them to.
Your work is never lost
Every keystroke is auto-saved and every version is kept in Git, so a bad edit, a crashed browser, or a change you regret costs you nothing: revert to any previous state in seconds.
Print and distribute your book
texlode checks your print files against Lulu’s print-on-demand requirements and generates EPUB for ebook platforms. More distribution channels are coming.
Print files checked for Lulu
From inside the editor, you have Lulu check your interior and cover PDFs against its print requirements, and texlode tells you how to upload them to Lulu. No inventory, no upfront cost: Lulu prints and ships each copy when a customer orders.
Wider distribution (coming soon)
IngramSpark and Amazon KDP integration are planned for after launch, giving your book access to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and thousands of independent bookstores.
Ebook export
Download your EPUB and upload it to Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, or Google Play Books. One source, any ebook platform.
You set the price
You choose your retail price when you publish on Lulu, and Lulu pays your revenue directly to you.
If you already write in LaTeX, you are ready to go
texlode runs on the LuaTeX engine. Your .tex files, bibliographies, and packages will work, and you will have a real-time preview that updates as you type.
Instant feedback
Incremental paragraph compilation in a few milliseconds, however long the book. Watch your typeset output update as you type.
No slowdown at 500 pages
With texlode, editing a paragraph in a 500-page textbook responds as quickly as editing a one-page letter. Document size does not affect your typing experience.
Drag to adjust values
Font sizes, margins, spacing: any point value has an integrated slider. Drag to compare settings and see the typeset result update live.
Move things on the page
Grab a paragraph in the preview and drag it to a new position. The source reorders automatically.
A WYSIWYG LaTeX editor that never makes you wait
Every other LaTeX editor, local or cloud, recompiles the full document on every edit. Overleaf's free tier times out after 20 seconds; paid plans take up to 62 seconds for a large document. texlode compiles only the paragraph you changed, in a few milliseconds.
| CPU per edit | Download | Network per edit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local LaTeX | 45 s of full CPU | 4–9 GB | None |
| Overleaf | 62 s of server CPU | None | Full PDF each time |
| Typst | ~140 ms | 48 MB | None |
| texlode | ~8 ms | None | A few KB |
CPU per edit: compute time to re-typeset after changing one paragraph, before anything is drawn. Local LaTeX and Overleaf figures from a 100-page document with bibliography (Octree benchmark, 10-run average). Typst and texlode: the same 6-line paragraph in a 300-page document, on the same machine (AMD EPYC cloud server); Typst 0.15.1 incremental, without PDF export. texlode's time does not grow with the length of the book, because only the changed paragraph is recompiled; Typst's grows with the document.
62,000× less CPU per edit
Overleaf runs over 1,000 server CPU cores just for LaTeX compilation. Each edit recompiles the entire document from scratch. texlode recompiles only the changed paragraph, in a few milliseconds. The server handles well over a thousand edits per second.
No 9 GB download, ever
TeX Live is 4–9 GB installed per machine, updated annually. Millions of copies worldwide, most of it never used. texlode runs everything on the server, so nothing lands on your disk in the first place.
Your battery lasts longer
Local compilation pins your CPU for seconds to minutes on every save. LuaLaTeX alone is 4–7x slower than pdfLaTeX. Overleaf offloads the work but sends back a full PDF on every compile. texlode sends only the changed paragraph, a few kilobytes. Your fan stays off.
Less compute, less energy, less waste
Cloud LaTeX editors recompile your entire document on every edit and ship a full PDF to your browser each time. Over an hour of active editing, that adds up to 600–1,200 CPU-seconds and hundreds of megabytes of PDF transfers per user. texlode recompiles only the changed paragraph and renders directly in the browser. The result: 10–30× less server compute per editing hour.
Zero PDFs during editing
Overleaf generates 60–120 PDFs per hour of active editing, one after every pause. texlode generates zero. The preview renders directly on your screen. A PDF is created once, when you export.
Collaboration without multiplied load
On Overleaf, each collaborator's edits trigger a full server-side recompile for everyone. Five people editing means five times the compute. On texlode, the server processes each edit once; all editors receive the same lightweight update.
Kilobytes instead of megabytes
Overleaf transfers a full PDF on every compile: 120 MB to 1.2 GB per hour of editing on a 100-page document. texlode sends only the changed paragraph data: a few kilobytes per edit.
Run it your way
texlode is available as a hosted service or deployed on your own infrastructure. Universities, publishers, and enterprises can run the full platform on-premises.

About the developer
Clemens has been writing and producing books with LaTeX since 2014: 10 of his own and more than 20 for clients, some up to 700 pages. Before that, over 20 years he built systems that transform structured data into formatted output, from game engines and optimization algorithms to medical backends and real-time data pipelines. Every feature in texlode comes from that convergence.
